The Salou Promenade
Situated in the culturally rich region of Catalonia: Spain’s equivalent to Italy’s Tuscany or France’s Provence, Salou is located on the fabulous coastline of northeast Spain, close to the large port
of Tarragona. It is approximately a 100km drive from Barcelona, to the northeast and about a 250km drive from Valencia, towards the southwest. In addition to four World Heritage Sites, the area is
also famous for the quality of its wine, distributed around the world and for its historic towns and villages, such as the colourful and historic town of Girona and the historic medieval riverside
town of Besalu.
Barcelona is the capital of the region (as well as being the second largest city in Spain) and is highly abundant in cultural charm and sightseeing opportunities, in addition to being a major sports centre.
The Salou Promenade is known locally as Passeig Jaume I in Spanish. In fact, the name ‘Jaume I’ is the king that it was named after, who established a fleet at the settlement back in 1229!
The promenade is elegantly aligned by beautiful tall palm trees, complimenting the idyllic Mediterranean climate found here. To the south lies the Blue Flag Llevant Beach, a 1000 metre wide stretch of golden sands that the meet the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, which is warm enough to swim in comfortably from May to October. To the north of the promenade there are numerous attractive houses and hotels, many with fine sea views from their south-facing rooms.
Along it there are play areas for children and snack bars nearby and on the beach you will find it easy to hire a pedalo or a sun bed for your relaxation. In Salou there is plenty on offer for the family: perhaps the most famous attractions being the PortAventura theme park or the Costa Caribe and Aquopolis theme parks. So depending on whether you wish to spend your time splashing about in the water parks or soaking up the sun on the hot sandy beach, Salou can guarantee an enjoyable holiday experience for all and sunshine is virtually guaranteed during the summer months.
Some trendy hotels close by include the Magnolia Hotel and the Hotel Monaco and there are also a number of family-orientated resort complexes along the coast nearby for a cheap holiday in Salou and the surrounding area.
Getting to the promenade is easy and is best reached via the C-14, taking you into the centre of Salou and then heading straight on, past the roundabout, until reaching the seafront. Here, you have arrived at the eastern end of the beautiful promenade and turning right you can drive through to admire it.
