Is There More to Padstow than Stein?
Travel Titbits have a mission we choose to accept! We need to find out if there is more to Padstow than Stein?
Now before visiting Padstow, or Pad-stein as we were told, we didn't actually know anything about the place. Apart from that there are a lot of Rick Stein restaurants and cafes. In fact there are 11 Rick Stein properties in this harbour town. From the famous Seafood Restaurant or Stein Cafe to the more convenient Stein Fish and Chips Takeaway or Stein Deli. Clearly he has a love for this place and wants to appeal to every type of visitor. But is there more to Pad-stein, sorry, Padstow than Stein?
Padstow really is a fantastic little harbour town with lots to offer. Firstly there is a vast collection of unique art galleries and shops to simply meander around, all positioned beautifully around the Inner Quay. Cafes and eateries a plenty, all of which producing there own take on the traditional Cornish pasty. I tried the banana and chocolate pasty which was strangely delicious.
There is a good range of activities on offer, such as fishing, surfing, walking the South West Coast Path or cycling the Camel Trail. We recommend trying one of the many boat trips. Wildlife lovers and those simply looking to relax should go for the Jubilee Queen, which does an hour long trip out of the estuary and over to Puffin Island. The cost is £10 and you dock the boat in the Inner Quay or on the Ferry Steps. For the thrill seekers there are 15 minute speedboat tours of the estuary for £5 at the same docks.
Its a great destination for a UK beach break as there are some excellent beaches all along the Camel Estuary. But our favourite one was across the estuary in Rock. There is a constant ferry from Padstow to Rock costing £3 for a return. It takes about 5 minutes to cross and has an awesome white sand beach with sand dunes offering fabulous natural wind breaks. There isn't much over in Rock, but it is worth a visit if simply to see where more millionaires than anywhere else in Cornwall choose to live.
We think there is more to Padstow and deserves to have the Pad-stein stigma taken away. There's great shops, fun activities for all ages, fantastic beaches, even banana and chocolate pasties.
Its official, Travel Titbits love Padstow!
Also one last piece of advice. A definite must to do before you leave is to try the battered oysters at Stein Fish and Chips takeaway, They really are good!
